CARLSBAD, California – The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Research Group (OMFSRG), a component of the International Association for Dental Research/American Association for Dental Research (IADR/AADR), announced the winners of its research awards for 2000. The research awards recognize outstanding research contributions and promote excellence in oral and maxillofacial surgery-related research. Chosen from the presentations given during the 78th General Session held in Washington DC from April 5-8, 2000, the recipient of the Sulzer Calcitek Prize for Dental Implant Research is, Professor Cameron Clokie, University of Toronto, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Toronto, Canada, "An Evaluation of Different Carriers for Native BMP and Recombinant BMP".

The members of the OMFSRG Awards Committee select the award winner based only on the scientific merit of the abstract and presentation. All presentations are scored using a rigorous set of criteria including originality, research methodology, scientific merit, and relevance of the research. Below is a brief description of the various awards given by OMFSRG.

The Prize for Dental Implant Research ($2,000) is funded by a grant from Sulzer Calcitek Inc, the dental care subsidiary of Sulzer Medica. The award is given to the lead investigator of the highest scored oral/poster presentation on the theme of dental implants and orofacial reconstruction (basic or clinical research) at the annual IADR/AADR meeting.
